[11 DAYS TO GO] The promised K-drama Rec List!

I’ve found no better way to learn how to recognise the sounds of the Korean language and see how many words and grammatical principles I can hear than through watching K-dramas! Not to mention that there’s something about this special way of telling stories that spoke to me the instant I started my very first drama.

But what makes K-dramas so special compared to American/English TV-shows???

I’d say it is the timing. How certain plot points are given more importance and some less, where a TV-show might have done the other way around. The way characters are portrayed and given reason, how everyone have their good and bad sides and, most of all, their development throughout the story. I don’t want to say Korean dramas are better than American/English TV-shows in general. They are just different. While I always had a hard time starting a TV-show unless someone pushed me into it, with dramas I need nothing more than to see a few GIFs to watch the first episode and get pulled in from there. I trust K-dramas to be good, in a way I never did standard TV-shows.

And I also think that many of the clichés and other verbal stuff that might make a show cringey are lost in translation. Since I don’t know the language 100%, or even 10%, I’m not scared off by a few bad lines or questionable acting since I can’t hear it.

So, rant over, let’s get on with the recommendations, 할까?

도깨비 [Goblin: The Great and Lonely God]

If you want a sweet and romantic drama filled with humour, clashing personalities and heart-wrenching plot twists, sprinkled with fantasy and legend, then this drama is for you. The Goblin, a warrior named Kim Shin in ancient times, is forbidden by the deities from dying until he finds his true love who can remove a sword from his heart and set him free. Many hundreds of years later he meets Eun Tak, a lovely and strong-willed orphan who can only be the one. The two of them go through many trying times as they find their way into each other’s hearts, along with a stray Grim Reaper, Kim Shin’s overconfident “nephew” and a red-haired beauty with strange connections to Kim Shin’s past.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo

A young woman drowns in modern times and wakes up in the body of another girl, in the ancient kingdom of Goryeo. As she learns to live the second life she has been granted, she gets tangled up with the princes of the current King, and each of their plots to either steal the throne for themselves, live happily or just be accepted by each other. This drama is so fricking intense, from the sweetest scenes between the brothers to the most gut-wrenching losses. With an amazing cast and story that goes beyond your usual level of detail, this drama deserves the title it received: Best Traditional Drama of 2017.

Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

Back to absolute and utter sweetness! This may be the most sugary drama I’ve ever watched, and yet it’s mix between serious criminal investigation, a mental kidnapper and Bong Soon’s inhuman strength makes it such a perfect balance. Get ready for a triangle drama, during which you will switch faves between the two male leads so often you’re not gonna be able to keep count. But don’t worry—this is a happy ending story, as compared to some on this list. Do Bong Soon’s neighbourhood is tormented by a murderer who targets young, beautiful women. While her best friend Guk Doo (slash Love Interest #1) works the police department day and night to catch the criminal, Bong Soon’s strength is discovered by young but successful CEO Min Hyuk (Love Interest #2), who hires her as his body guard. Absolute amazingness ensues!

써클 [Circle: Two Worlds Connected]

With its innovative way of splitting each episode into two parts—one set in modern times, one set 20 years later—Circle really got me from the first few minutes. The story is smart, intriguing and absolute death for my heart because of my addiction to bromance. Twin brothers Woo Jin and Beom Gyun’s father adopted an young “alien” woman when they were little,  a girl who never aged and did strange things. In PART 1, now 21-year-old Woo Jin is reunited with his brother who has been in psychiatric hospital after suspected murder. They meet Jung Yeon, who looks exactly like their alien sister, and Beom Gyun becomes obsessed with finding out what she is and how she is connected to the recent murders and their father’s disappearance. When Beom Gyun goes missing, it’s Woo Jin’s turn to become obsessed with finding his brother before it’s too late.

In PART 2, Seoul has been split into two different worlds—one is an almost deserted wasteland and the other is a Smart City, top modern, rich and free of crime because of chips implanted in everyone’s brains. Police officer Joon Hyuk from Normal Seoul infiltrates the Smart City after they receive a distress call from within the “crime-free” city. His true intentions is to solve the old “Missing Twins Case”, with which he has a very personal connection.

So, which dramas have I gotten you hooked on? These are only a small portion of the dramas I would like to recommend, but I’ll save some for another time. Next time I do a rec list I’ll do Korean movies, because there’s a few of those too!

Until then, 안녕히 가세요!!

[14 DAYS LEFT]🌈 Running for Korea, and EXO’s The War! 🍉

EXO just released their comeback album, the 4th full one, named The War, and holy Castiel, was that awesome!? I've listened through the whole thing twice, and I'm currently out trying to prepare my body for South Korea, of course with songs like Forever, Ko Ko Bop and The Eve in my ears from the new album.

Did you participate in giving EXO 100,000,000 hearts on V LIVE today? Are you one of the 800,000 people who preordered the album?

I am 😘

Fashion Show!

Here’s a complete show-off of the goodies that I purchased specifically for the South Korea trip. I might add some more beauties to the collection, but this is what I have so far. I really wanted to update my wardrobe before I went, so that I can feel fabulous and fashionable in a country full of beautiful and fashionable people! ♥

Oh, and I got every single piece of clothing + the bag in these photos for 1,075 SEK total. That’s 128 dollars. And THAT’S how you stay cheap AND stay awesome-looking!

And lastly, for my favourite outfit! ♥

FS 8.jpg

What do you think? Do I work these styles? ^^ ♥ I really hope I do, and the best part about the whole thing is that I feel comfortable in all these clothes, which is soooo important because there will be so many other things to focus on that I don’t want to wear clothes that look good but aren’t comfy.

[21 DAYS LEFT] My face is melting!

After a long and strenuous work period I am now free to take care of myself, my home and, of course, my preparations for the trip to Korea! ♥ I’ve been shopping a lot for clothes and other stuff that will make the trip even more fabulous, and I was one lucky gal more than once. I’ll tell you more about the fashion I bought later, some show-and-tell action coming right up, but first I wanted to show you this little beauty on the photo which I found at an H&M’s store in my city.

It’s a Korean face mask! It’s from Kocostar [코코스타], and the packaging is in Hangul, which when I saw it made me very happy. Its original price was 49 SEK, which is roughly 6 dollars or 6900 KRW, but there was some kind of unadvertised sale going on, so the two packs I got cost me 60 SEK together. I didn’t really care for the price—it’s Korean and I can get it in Sweden. I’m buying it!

And that’s why it looks like my face is melting right off. I’m wearing the mask, which should be on for 30 mins, as I’m writing this and I feel revitalised already! ^^

[25 DAYS TO GO] What shall the plus-sized girl wear?

This little rant of mine is NOT directed AT YOU, my beautiful readers! ♥

It comes a goes in waves, the confidence in my beauty and physical worth. Luckily for me, the waves are extremely uneven. For every day of feeling ugly and fat, I get to have a hundred days feeling awesome and just right. I’m comfortable with my size and I like knowing that I am slightly overweight because I can use that to my advantage on days when I’m feeling really good and want to actually exercise some of my extra chub-chub away.

Why am I saying this? Because these are my feelings and beliefs while still in Sweden, your typical European/Far Western-cultured country, and not South Korea.

I’m not worried about being called fat over there. I’m not worried that many of their sizes won’t fit me. What I want, however, is to be able to be comfortable enough in my quite random set of styles so that when Koreans look at me they won’t think I’m unhappy. Like, “Hello! Yes, I’d like very much to lose some weight but I won’t let myself be stressed or miserable about it”.

I’ve been shopping some clothes for the hot summer of South Korea, and I’ve been going bold with the styles because I have no sense of modern fashion, only my own fashion. I don’t care what others wear, as long as I think I look fabulous. Looks are very important to me, both my clothes and my make-up, but you’ll never ever catch me caring about other people’s possibly negative opinions concerning how I look.

I don't give a fuck

Go ahead, call me whatever you want. Just remember that I said it first.

And now that’s over! 😀 고맙습니다!!

[27 DAYS TO GO] Getting my passport, and the Korean Phrasebook

There are a lot of things that need to be prepared when you do a trip like this—especially when you plan on using the language of your destination as much as possible instead of relying on good old English. Of course there will be instances when English is very necessary for us, but I want to know enough Korean so that I can get by on just that in everyday tourist situations. Because of that I have begun gathering good-to-know phrases so that I can write them down in a notebook and practice them until I know them by heart.

I’m using a lot of different YouTube channels for this, including Talk To Me In Korean, Korean 언니, Sweet And Tasty TV, as well as my membership at I really think you should check these channels out, because there’s no better way to learn Korean for free than this!

Some of the phrases in the PhraseBook so far:

  • 이거 일/이/삼인분 (더) 조세요.
= Please give me one/two/three servings (more) of this.

You use this phrase in restaurants when ordering. I modified the counters (일 [1], 이 [2], 삼 [3]) because we will be three people travelling, and depending on it you order for the first time or you want to order more of something you can either exclude or include the 더, which means more.

  • 좀 더 둘러 보고 다시 올게요.
= I’ll look around some more and come back later.

Whether or not you actually intend to come back to a store or market stall, this is a polite goodbye phrase, especially if combined with “안녕히 계세요” and a cute smile. In order, the words mean: 좀 (some/a little) 더 (more) 둘러 보 (browse/look around)고 (and) 다시 (later) 올 (come back)게요 (polite sentence ending).

  • … 안 들어간 거 있어요?
= Do you have something that does not contain…?

Perfect for vegetarians, vegans and people with allergies. For us three travellers this won’t be too useful because none of us have any allergies or food preferences. I will look up a phrase meaning “Can you please leave out onion/chili/etc”, because modifying a meal should be easier than finding something that is already without it.

Xiumin gives a kiss

With that I’ll leave you in Xiumin’s lovely gaze and go to the city, where I will finally get my new passport, and spend some quality time with friends from work eating pizza and racing with go karts! 😀

The thing about K-pop #5

The amount of active K-pop groups right now is probably at some peak or another, girl groups and boy groups alike, and I couldn’t possibly attempt to count them all. I only know the names of a fraction of them, and far less than that end up on my K-POP! it up list which is my daily listening playlist. I would probably have over a thousand songs on that list right now if I had listened to every single active K-pop group there is.

Suga what now

Yeah, Suga. Me too.

There are the huge names in the genre that almost everyone knows about—Big Bang, TWICE, EXO, Girl’s Generation—to only name a few. Then there are endless numbers of smaller groups, groups that have disbanded, taken a break of just vanished. Groups that work day and night and only ever gain a small amount of followers. Groups that are made to only last a year (I’m looking at you, Produce 101!).

It’s so easy to find new groups to stan, and yet so Cass-damned difficult. I for one need a lot of willpower to sit down and listen through the top 5 songs of any group which I haven’t been forcibly introduced to by a friend or by accident.

Let’s list a few of the “less popular/known” K-pop groups, the songs that made me fall head over heals for them, and how I found them:

♥ GOT7 (found through Markson) ♥

These puppies are next up on my list of groups I want to know by heart, now that I have satisfied my insane need to know every EXO member by their jawlines. My BFF introduced me to them through the most popular ship within the group—Markson, which is the ship between Mark and Jackson (they made an entire show about it where they practically ship themselves to death). Once that got me hooked it was all a slide from there, starting with a Hard Carry addiction and moving on to waiting for their comeback like a dog for their owner.

Got7 songs on the K-POP! it up list:

  • Hard Carry
  • My Swagger
  • Never Ever

♥ BEAST/Highlight (found through Ki Kwang in “Circle”) ♥

This was a double find actually. I was watching the incredible K-drama Circle: Two Worlds Connected like crazy, and I was so in love with the character of Ho Soo, who happened to be played by Ki Kwang (far right). I had no idea. It wasn’t until me and my friend found an article titled “ugly K-pop artists”, featuring among others the adorable Yang Yoseob (second from the left), that I went on an angry rant search for pictures of BEAST and realised that I recognised Ki Kwang. Not long after that I did my first ever MV Watch-through, looking at each of BEAST’s official MVs in order of release, and ended up on what it now Highlight, a new version of the group featuring all but one of the original members. I wish you the best of luck, Highlight!

BEAST/Highlight songs on the K-POP! it up list:

  • Breath (BEAST)
  • 12:30 (BEAST)
  • Fiction (BEAST)
  • Plz don’t be sad (Highlight)
  • Can you feel it? (Highlight)
  • The Divine Move (Yang Yoseob)

♥ VIXX (from the Original K-pop List) ♥

These cuties have been on the list of groups I want to know my heart for a very long time—the longest time actually. When my friend was first introduced to K-pop by another friend of hers, that other friend gave my friend a list of songs and MVs to check out. Obviously, once my friend was hooked she had me look at the list, and one of the songs from that list was actually “Hyde” by VIXX. I love the song sooooo much, one of the first K-pop songs I just couldn’t stop listening to. Now, much later, I have a bunch of songs from them on my playlists, but I still don’t know their faces or watched even a single MV. It’s definitely time to change that!

VIXX songs on the K-POP! it up list:

  • Hyde
  • Maze
  • Desperate
  • Dynamite
  • Love me do
  • Fantasy
  • Chained up
  • Error

♥ Blackpink (my best friend’s favourite girl group) ♥

These four rays of badass sunshine are just too adorable. My best friend found them by herself when they debuted, and we watched through everything they had put out in one sitting. Their music didn’t make as much of an impression on me as many other groups have, but now they’ve made their comeback with “As If It’s Your Last”, and I am completely and utterly lost in them now. By far my favourite girl group, and I hope they will rise far beyond their current rookie status.

Blackpink songs on the K-POP! it up list:

  • Boombayah
  • Playing with fire
  • As if it’s your last

Now, fans of all types, that’s it for this part of The Thing About K-pop! I hope you’ll find yourself addicted to some of the groups I’ve mentioned today, and that you find your own new addictions among the hundreds of options there are!

안녕히 가세요 친구들!!

[30 DAYS TO GO] I’ve got an owie…

After a good night’s sleep the pain from my Hepatitis shot has become worse, and the bruise is growing by the hour. Haha! I have no problems with bring bruised while still in Sweden, but with genes from my mother that could cause bruises that cover half my arm (that happened to her once after a flu shot…) I’d prefer not to look like that when going to Korea. Well, no need to worry about anything now—it’s not nearly as bad as it could be and I can’t do anything about it anyway. Aaaaand I won’t be able to do anything about the effects of the second shot in a month either, so….

Now, I’ll head out for a jog which I haven’t done in ages, and see if my horribly unfit body can still manage to run through an entire K-pop song (N.O by BTS and One Shot by B.A.P are my favourites because the beats match my running style).

At least the weather was nice a few minutes ago… XD

The South Korea Trip

[31 DAYS TO GO] I’m officially going to South Korea!

Those of you who have followed my short little journey on here knows I’ve wanted nothing more for quite some time. And I’ve wanted few things as badly in my life as I’ve wanted to go to South Korea, to see if I will love the country, culture and people as much when I’m there as I do from home.

Now, thanks to my two best friends, this is happening. I can’t even express how excited, happy and dying I am! 31 DAYS TO GO!

Heart burst of rainbows.gif

On August 1st our plane will leave Sweden in direction of Doha, Qatar, from where we will transfer to Incheon. Fifteen whole days in South Korea, split between two cities and the wonderful Jeju Island, Three friends, three cities. And what we will experience there I can only hope will change my life. We will discover the cities, make a nighttime mountain hike, watch a weekly K-pop event called MCountdown and eat lots and lots of exciting Korean food.

I have yet to discuss this with my two babes, but there’s a huge possibility of recording the whole trip and turn it into a jolly sort of travel documentary. Of course, every day until we travel and every day we are there will be written down on here, so you can follow along when my dream comes true! 화이팅!!

Today’s preparation: Fetch my new passport, and get my vaccinations
